We Are Proud to Present Our Interview with Unconventional Pastor Paul here on Actword

Unconventional Pastor Paul

The following is a conversation between Conscience And Nonsense Magazine’s very own Nathan Hyatt and Pastor Paul Swearengin. Pastor Paul’s preferred pronouns are “They/Them.” Pastor Paul wants to spread the word that God is not mad at people. Paul is a friend to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and explores intersex fashion and issues. Paul has written a novel called Religious Right Religiously Wrong and is part of the Evangelicalish Podcast. Their website may be reached at Pastor-Paul.com (please copy and paste. Make sure to use the “dash” (-); there is another “Pastor Paul” not to be confused with the subject of our interview.)…

Pick Something:

Why is This Magazine Here?

A band of kids performs with a gentleman.

What is its purpose?

We have asked ourselves that question over and over again and it’s a good question and we should ask it.

We want other people to ask it too and we wanted to have an answer.

Here is the answer:

This magazine exists because its creator needed to do something for himself and people like him.

Allow me to introduce Nathan Hyatt.

His pronouns are “he/him/his” and he lives with schizoaffective/bipolar type I. He is also ADHD, has autistic tendencies, shades of personality disorder (no diagnosis) and is Queer. He is a chronic self-injurer who copes with addiction.

From now on, I will just come on out into the open and refer to myself as “me.”

Conscience And Nonsense Magazine founder, Nathan Hyatt

I was talking to a friend the other day about the direction this magazine should go. He said that I needed to focus on one group of people that I want to help.

I agree.

He also said that this sounds like it should be a nonprofit.

That is where I disagree.

On balance, there is probably nothing wrong with raising money tax-exempt to “help” neurodivergent people and the differently-abled.

Until there is.

My community has been shoved into a box for too long. Try always.

We have been told by well-meaning people that we needed to learn to “cope” with our “problems” and “challenges” and that we need to learn to “overcome our frustration.”

But we do not want to be labeled. That’s ironic, because I proudly wear the labels I described above.

This magazine is here because I know what is going to happen.

We are going to call this a space for the neurodivergent, differently-abled, disabled and generally different.

And people are going to come stick their noses in it and decide that it is up to them to tell us how we should do it, that we should not do it, that we should just go away, that we do not really exist and all kinds of other malarky and bullshit.

We are here and we are real and we have a voice.

We were beaten, gaslighted, abused and neglected as children.

Many of us still are children.

But now many of us have grown into adults and we have a voice and a vote.

Many of us are still mistreated as adults.

We have a say in how we will be regarded and treated.

We have a say in the fact that we have Civil Rights which shall be recognized.

We reserve the right to stim in public.

We are different and we are done caring about your feelings about it.

We are done bowing to charities that call themselves our champions when they are not.

We are done being treated like we are incapable and need to sit down.

Let other people sit down.

This is our turn to talk.

And we have something to say.

We have been left out and “othered” and treated like we were the ones who needed to change for far too long.

We have sat in wheelchairs and drawn headshakes of pity.

We have been physically picked up and thrown.

We have been mocked and berated during seizures.

We have been told that no one was going to call emergency services because there was “nothing wrong with us.”

We have been punished for being disabled while in a classroom.

We have been shot at and shot.

Laws have been passed to take away funding from programs to help us.

Laws have been passed to outlaw giving us medical care and acknowledging our identity as who we are.

We have been attacked for being trans.

We have been told that the reason we had hard lives was because we were sinful in a past life.

We have been told that God hated us.

We have been told that we were different because we were “sinful.”

We have been fired from jobs because we could not or would not do certain things on a given day or under certain circumstances.

We have been fired precisely for being disabled.

We have been passed over for hires and promotions because we are different.

We have been told that we “could not be accommodated.”

We have been sent to recovery meetings and led to believe that should be our new permanent home.

We have been told flatly to take medication that was wrong for us and did more harm than good.

We have been told to stop taking medication that we needed by those who do not believe in science.

We have been told that our medication was going to cost $4000 for a 30 day supply.

We have been told not to have children.

We have been the targets of genocide during world wars.

I will repeat that.

We have been the targets of genocide during world wars.

We have been attacked, raped, tortured and murdered.

We have died in prisons, cut off from the care we needed.

We have been told we are outnumbered.

We are not.

We and our allies outnumber those who hate us for who we are.

No. This is not a new charity.

This is a movement that has always been in the works.

We are coming out in numbers and showing others and each other that we are here and that we no longer have to be afraid.

We are here to have honest conversations about all the things that make us different and all the things that make us just the same.

We are not here to start a fight.

Too many people have bullied us and tried to start fights with us.

We are here to live life and be included and respected.

We are here to participate in the game of life.

We are here to play role-playing games.

A woman sits peacefully on her lover's lap and holds a guitar upright.

We are here to play chess and solve puzzles.

We are here just to shop for some damn groceries.

We are here to drive on the same roads as everyone else.

We are here to start organizations.

We are here to join clubs.

We are here to go to churches, temples and synagogues.

We are here to learn foreign languages.

We are here to be teachers.

We are here to work as employees.

We are here to be managers and bosses.

We are here to be caregivers.

We are here to get married and have children.

We are here to go to school and earn a degree.

We are here to serve in the military.

We are here to overcome the trauma of serving in the military (I am not a veteran, but many of us are).

We are here to save the lives of people like us who are on the verge of ending their own life.

We are here to save our own lives by being part of a community that accepts us.

We are here to cure diseases (not the “disorders” that help to define who we are).

We are here to treat disorders (often the ones we live with that cause us real pain).

If all of this is too much nuance for you, then go look at something else.

We are not going away.

God keeps making more of us.

And this World is made for us just as much as it is made for anyone else.

If you are one of us or you care about one of us who is a loved one, then keep coming back to see how you can help.

Thank You for your time.
